South African Weather Forecasts

Our Climate

South Africa is a large country and has diverse climactic regions, but in general the weather is sunny and hot in the summer months (December to April), and mild during winter (May to November). Winters in the Cape are cold and wet, and snow falls on the mountain ranges here and in Natal. Gauteng and the northern areas experience thunderstorms regularly during evenings in the summer months, and winters are usually warm during the day and cold at night.

Although South Africa's climate varies considerably across its various regions and environments, temperatures remain comfortable throughout the year. The best time to visit for a safari is between May to August, when there is less rain and much less dense vegetation, making animal sightings far more frequent.

Almost all of South Africa's 472,000 square miles (1.2 million sq. km.) lie below the Tropic of Capricorn, and the country is geographically composed of three primary regions: an expansive central plateau, a nearly continuous escarpment of mountain ranges that ring the plateau on the west, south, and east, and a narrow strip of low-lying land along the coast. Most of the central plateau (and most of the country) consists of high (4,000-6,000 ft/1,220-1,830 m), rolling grassland known as highveld. The highest points of the mountainous escarpment are found in the stunning Drakensberg (dragon's back) Mountains, where the tips of the Drakensberg can exceed heights of 10,000 ft (3,050 m).

Are you new to cruising?

1. On taking your first cruise, you are going to be so spoilt that other types of holidays will be ruined for the rest of your life!
Ok perhaps I am just a cruise fanatic, but this is how I truly feel.
2. You will however find, that no matter how long you sail for, it's never long enough, and you will be yearning to return the following season.
3. You will certainly make new friends and have a wonderful time on board, it is all up to you.
4. You will never find such good value for money anywhere else.

I strongly suggest that you: Do allow enough time to watch the shows; Do take trousers and skirts 2 sizes bigger as you will need them by day two after the magnificent spreads 4 times a day; Do read the daily news sheet which comes through the cabin door every evening as this will tell you what is going on and where.

Remember that Starlight Cruises have a wonderful team onboard and onshore who are available to answer all your questions.
